These Wrestlers Were Dealt a Bad Hand With Some Serious Health Issues
Like many other sports, wrestling demands physical agility, dedication, and skill. Unlike many other sports, however, it requires one to physically and even mentally dominate and subdue their opponent. The best moments of a wrestler's career are the times when they're declared the winner of the bout. Nothing can replace that joy and happiness.
Sadly, many of those who've easily annihilated their opponents in the ring have been floored by a fearsome enemy: sickness. Some wrestlers emerge victorious after a long fight with this foe while a few others don't. Below is a list of famous wrestlers who fought hard against some disease:
Michelle McCool Vs. Skin Cancer
Michelle McCool is considered one of the most successful female wrestlers to ever grace the ring. She's still popular today despite having stepped down in 2011. She was still very fit physically when in 2016 she shared some bad news with her followers on social media.
McCool had visited the hospital for a standard medical procedure that involved the removal of moles. Sadly, one of the moles turned out to be malignant and cancerous. Months of treatment followed until she was finally cancer free. To crown her triumph and happiness, Michelle's final treatments coincided with the return of her husband, The Undertaker, to wrestling.
The Fight That Took Roddy Piper
Roddy Piper was considered by many to have unrivaled wrestling skills. Added to that, he was a hardy fellow who'd survived several accidents and unfortunate incidents. In the 61 years of his life, Piper survived a plane crash, and multiple stabbings, and fought against cancer. Then in 2006, he was diagnosed with lymphoma and resorted to radiation and chemotherapy.
After some time of treatment and strict dieting, he began to feel strong again. However, the many years of fighting against the disease took a toll on his heart. Roddy passed on in 2015 but is still remembered today as a great wrestler.
Jim Duggan Has Beat Cancer on Multiple Counts
Jim Duggan has been a wrestler since 1979. Most people call him "Hacksaw" because of his unique way of fighting. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with renal cancer in 1998, but doctors were able to treat it on time. He recovered quickly and returned to smacking his opponents in the ring.
Jim continued his career as a wrestler until 2012 when he finally retired. In 2018 and 2019, he was told that he had a heart condition that required surgery. Gladly, both surgeries were successful and Duggan was back to his former self. However, in 2021, the former wrestler told his social media followers that he'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He, again, underwent some treatment until he fully recovered.
